CEO tackling mental health in workplace

Family Continuity CEO Barbara Wilson has joined other Central Massachusetts CEOs in lending her support to the CEOs Against Stigma campaign.

The CEO of Family Continuity has thrown her weight behind CEOs Against Stigma, a national campaign to encourage more understanding and acceptance of people dealing with mental illness.

CEO Barbara Wilson has joined other Central Massachusetts CEOs in lending her support to the campaign, which is spearheaded by the National Alliance on Mental Illness – Massachusetts. Family Continuity is a private, non-profit mental health and social services agency serving Eastern and Central Massachusetts with approximately 250 employees. This new pledge of support for mental health within her own organization meshes perfectly with Family Continuity’s mission, Wilson said.

“To advocate for the people we support and not for our own staff would be hypocritical as well as unethical. It is important for us to ‘talk the talk and walk the walk,’” she said.

The campaign asks CEOs to take several steps to encourage more understanding and acceptance of people facing mental illness. Participants educate themselves and other company executives about mental health issues and encourage a dialogue among workers to create a stigma-free workplace. They also make sure appropriate benefits and support are available to workers, and help spread public awareness in partnership with NAMI. By challenging the misconceptions about mental illness, the goal is for people to feel like they can talk freely about the conditions that might affect them, a co-worker, or family member.

The objective of CEOs Against Stigma is to sign 250 executives to the campaign and reach half a million employees. Any Massachusetts company with at least 50 employees can join.
