Coakley: State Needs Business Guidance

Local businesses need to make sure government officials understand their concerns about the effects of state regulations, Attorney General Martha Coakley told business leaders yesterday.

Speaking at a North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce Power Lunch event at the Wachusett Village Inn in Westminster, Coakley said the Division of Business, Technology and Economic Development, which she created in 2007, can act as a go-between for businesses and the state offices that regulate them. Although the division's first head, James Scafide, recently left the job for a position elsewhere, she said her office remains committed to the work he was doing.

Because the attorney general is charged with enforcing regulations like new state data security rules, she said she wants to make sure they are enforceable and not overly burdensome to businesses

Coakley also discussed her recent work with the Department of Public Utilities to hold Unitil Corp. accountable for any misdeeds that may have contributed to the extended power outage some in the area experienced after December's ice storm. She said she understands some residents' frustration with the process but that she does not expect the state to reach a conclusion on the matter until May or June at the earliest.
