Defense officials touring Mass. labs

About 30 officials from the Department of Defense are visiting Massachusetts this week to learn more about the state's "innovation economy," MassDevelopment President and CEO Marty Jones said.

The group from the Pentagon, Jones said, planned to meet with officials at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, Hanscom Air Force Base, the MITRE Corporation, and will participate in a forum Thursday evening to discuss cyber security issues.

Jones said she plans to attend Thursday's forum -- to be held at the British consulate's space at Cambridge Innovation Center -- but a MassDevelopment spokeswoman deferred to the Department of Defense when asked for additional information on the event.

A Defense spokeswoman told the News Service she was not able to find additional information to provide unless the reporter knew the identity of the most senior defense official taking part in the events.

During a MassDevelopment Board of Directors meeting Thursday morning, Jones said she hopes the meeting will foster additional collaboration between the Department of Defense and Massachusetts companies.

"We would obviously be very interested in the Department of Defense becoming more engaged in Massachusetts, potentially setting up an office or setting up a partnership to be able to access some of the great innovation that's happening here," she said.

On Friday, the Massachusetts Military Asset and Security Strategy Task Force will host Air Force/Army Business Industry Day, an event providing businesses information on how to contract with Hanscom Air Force Base and the U.S. Army's Natick Soldier Systems Center in Devens.
