Editorial: A loud signal to business
The weeks-long drama over the leadership and direction of the Market Basket grocery store chain has led to a big question about business that has yet to be answered: Can workers force a company's leaders to accede to their demands; in this case, restoring the respected and admired Arthur T. Demoulas as CEO.
The Market Basket case is unique in that the workers are not investors, but have invested their livelihoods in a company that has been successful and that, from many accounts, respects its workers in return.
At a time when confidence in big business is lower than that of public education, the presidency and the police, according to a recent Gallup Poll, the fight over the future of Market Basket is one that businesses — both large and small — are watching closely and cannot ignore.
