ExxonMobil delays Charlton water line construction

ExxonMobil’s construction on a six-mile water pipeline to address contaminants from a Charlton gas station will begin about a year later than expected.
The company, which agreed to a $30-million project to bring municipal water to parts of the town, now expects to begin construction on the waterline sometime between now and 2019, with the entire project expected to be completed in 2021, ExxonMobile said on the project's website.
Construction was expected to begin last summer, but issues with the town’s water pressure in areas serviced by a connection from Southbridge’s water system has forced the company to delay work until those issues are addressed.
The town’s existing water lines lack adequate pressure in some areas, so construction has been delayed as the town works to resolve those issues.
However, the company is still planning to install the bulk of the water main in the interim, with the goal of completing the waterline by 2020 and installing individual connections in 2021, as originally planned.
The company is holding a community meeting on June 12 at the Charlton Public Library to update residents on the new timeline.
The deal was struck in 2016 for the company to install a water system after concerns of contaminants from the company’s LaMountain gas station and other sources into the town’s groundwater to service residents and buildings in parts of town without an active public water supply.
The system to be installed by ExxonMobile will bring public water to Charlton Middle School, Charlton Heritage Elementary School, Bay Path Regional High School, Masonic Home and dozens of other residents.
