Foxwoods Partners With Milford Casino Developer

Foxwoods has jumped into the casino ring in Massachusetts, saying it's partnering with developer David Nunes' Crossroads Massachusetts LLC, which has submitted a proposal for a resort-style casino in Milford.

"We think the pairing represents the foundation of a compelling case for a Boston-area gaming license," the owner of Foxwoods Casino in Ledyard, Conn., said in a statement. "Crossroads brings the Milford site, an excellent location for a gaming focused development; and Foxwoods brings unparalleled regional gaming experience."

In the statement, Foxwoods added that it brings a "dominant market position" and Massachusetts customer base to the table, as many Bay Staters travel across the border to Connecticut.

The $700-million Milford casino proposal faces several hurdles within the town, which include a deal with town officials, a referendum and a Town Meeting vote to change the zoning governing the land Nunes owns. Officials in neighboring communities have been vocal about their skepticism and Nunes may also have to come to some kind of an agreement with them.

If he receives town approval, Nunes faces stiff competition from other developers in the region, which includes the Boston area. Las Vegas tycoon Steve Wynn has set out to build a casino in Everett and Boston's Suffolk Downs is also in the running.

Under the state's expanded gaming legislation, one casino can be developed in each of three regions across the state, while one slots parlor will be allowed.
