Framingham Firm Linked To Meningitis Outbreak Loses License

The New England Compounding Center in Framingham has surrendered its license to operate Massachusetts in the wake of a meningitis outbreak linked to the facility, the state’s Department of Public Health (DPH) said today.

Various media reports say there have been five deaths and the number of suspected cases is 35 and continues to rise. According to a statement from the DPH, the cases of fungal meningitis are under investigation in Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia and all are linked by four common products. One is a steroid prepared at NECC, whose website said it was temporarily unavailable this afternoon.

The steroid has been recalled and quarantined as a precaution and NECC is recalling similar medications, the DPH said.

The DPH said it’s working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other state public health officials to identify the cause of the outbreak.
