Harrington Breaks Ground On Emergency Department

Harrington HealthCare System broke ground Tuesday on an $8.8 million reconstruction of the emergency department at its hospital in Webster.

The first major renovation for the emergency department since it was built in 1955 should be finished by fall 2014, according to the Southbridge-based health care system.

The project will increase the facility’s area from 3,000 to 13,000 square ffet, and allow for nine patient beds rather than just five. Other amenities include a newly constructed main entrance and lobby, a private family waiting area, and a rebuilt and enhanced ambulance entrance.

“We are here today because of the generosity of all of you who have donated to this project,” CEO Edward H. Moore said in a statement. “What once appeared impossible is now a triumph for Harrington and the community.”

Harrington also Tuesday revealed the identity of its anonymous $4 million donation. The money came from Arthur Remillard Jr. and the Remillard Family Foundation, the healthcare system said.

Harrington currently has more than $5.8 million available for the project, thanks in part to $1.5 million in state funding. Harrington will continue raising money to meet the total project cost, the healthcare system said.
