Homeowners Can Get $50 For Freezers

Boston-based NStar wants to give customers $50 to get rid of energy-sucking auxiliary refrigerator and freezer units.

The company, which provides gas and electric service to communities in Central Massachusetts, estimates that inefficient refrigerator and freezer units could be costing owners up to $150 per year in energy costs.

NStar, through the statewide MassSave program, is offering $50 for customers who sign up to have their units picked up. Customers of other utility companies may participate through their own providers as well.

There is a maximum of two units per household and they must all be secondary units for the household and in working order. They must be at least 10 cubic feet or more in size.

MassSave is a coordinated program between the energy companies, state energy offices and energy efficiency companies to reduce energy consumption across the state.
