Hope For Summer Jobs

Teenagers hoping to gain some work experience this summer - not to mention some cash - are in a better position than last year, according to an analysis of government data by Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc.

Teen employment, which normally picks up during the summer, grew by 71,000 in May, compared with a mere 6,000 jobs gained in May 2010. But the figure was still lower than in most years. In 2009, there were 111,000 jobs added during the month.

The biggest surge in teen employment usually occurs in June, so Challenger said the picture will be clearer next month.
