Mass. gas prices up 33 cents over last year

FreeDigitalPhotos.net Gas prices in the state have not rebounded after a big spike due to hurricanes last fall.

Massachusetts drivers are paying an average of 33 cents more per gallon for gasoline than this time last year, according to AAA Northeast.

The auto club’s weekly survey of gas prices in the state found average price for regular unleaded were $2.57 per gallon on Monday.

That price is 9 cents below the national average, but 33 cents above the $2.24 price recorded one year ago.

“In spite of a drop in crude oil prices last week, generally higher crude oil prices, coupled with the seasonal switch to the summer gasoline blends – which are more expensive for refiners to produce – are combining to boost the cost of fuel at the pump,” said Mary Maguire, director of public and legislative affairs

In September, gas prices surged 44 cents to $2.70 after Hurricane Harvey ravaged the Gulf of Mexico for days, knocking out oil refineries and disrupted the normal supply of gasoline to the Northeast.

Since then, prices have fallen, but never quite reached the $2.26 average before the hurricane season last fall. Since the start of 2018, prices have risen 14 cents.
