Mass. Government Gets A “C” For Transparency

A new report on transparency in state governments puts Massachusetts around the middle of the pack, coming in 21st out of the 50 states for its ethics mechanisms.

The State Integrity Investigation, a project of the Center for Public Integrity, Public Radio International and Global Integrity, gave Massachusetts a "C" grade. It said the state's best transparency measures are the ones around its campaign finances, an area run by the Office of Campaign and Political Finance. Massachusetts got its lowest score for the state budget process, coming in 47th in the nation for a lack of public visibility around budget matters. The report noted that legislators discuss budget amendments off the record and it's even difficult to track how votes are cast.

New Jersey received the best grade for its state policies, followed by Connecticut, while Georgia got the lowest marks, just below South Dakota.
