Mass. Jobless Rate Down To 8.4% In September

The state's unemployment rate dropped to 8.4 percent in September from 8.8 percent the month before, the steepest month-to-month drop since 1976, according to the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The department said it had revised its August job estimates down from a 2,100-job gain to a 3,000-job loss.

September's jobless rate is the lowest it's been in 16 months.

Preliminary estimates show 3.17 million jobs in Massachusetts, a decrease of 20,900 from the month before as seasonal employment in the accommodation and food service sector came to an end.

Over-the-year, private sector jobs have increased 20,800. The financial activities, information and professional, scientific and business services sectors added jobs during the month.
