Mass. ranks 8th in the U.S. for having a baby

Parents expecting a baby are better off in Massachusetts than they would be in most other states, according to a new report from WalletHub.

The finance website looked at all 50 states and the District of Columbia and analyzed 17 different metrics, including hospital cesarean-delivery charges, infant mortality rates and number of child care centers per capita to determine its 2016 list of best and worst states to have a baby.

Massachusetts was named No. 8 in the nation for its low infant-mortality rate, and high number of pediatricians and family doctors, OBGYNs and midwives per capita. New England states took four out of the top five spots on the list, with Vermont, Maine and Connecticut rounding out the top three and New Hampshire in fifth place. Rhode Island was ranked 18th on the list.
