Mass. Unemployment Down To 7.8%

The April unemployment rate in Massachusetts was 7.8 percent, down from 8 percent in March, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The number of jobs in the state also rose by 19,500. The private sector added 20,500 jobs, while the public sector lost jobs due to reductions in federal-level employment.

The office also revised its employment estimate for March from a gain of 3,200 jobs to a loss of 1,300.

The leisure and hospitality sector added 5,600 jobs over the month, an increase of 1.8 percent. Employment in trade, transportation and utilities rose 0.8 percent, adding 4,200 jobs.

Over the past year, the unemployment rate has fallen from 8.6 percent.
