Mass. unemployment rate falls below 3 percent

The November unemployment rate in Massachusetts sank to 2.9 percent, two points lower than a year ago at this time and the lowest level since January 2001.

Employers added 5,800 jobs last month and the unemployment rate was down 0.4 points from 3.3 percent in November, the Executive Office of Labor and Economic Development reported Thursday morning.

The positive news on the jobs and unemployment fronts has not translated into a surge in state tax collections. Gov. Charlie Baker and the Legislature continue to struggle through budget problems stemming from soft revenue growth and projected spending levels that exceed amounts allocated in the fiscal 2017 budget.
