MassPort Putting $36M Into Worcester Airport

As part of a five-year capital improvement plan by the Massachusetts Port Authority's (MassPort), the Worcester Regional Airport could see $36 million in improvements.

The plan, approved by MassPort's board last week, cites 341 projects worth $1 billion to be implemented between this year and 2017 across MassPort facilities, which also include Boston's Logan International Airport and Hanscom Field in Bedford.

According to a statement from MassPort, $32 million would be allocated for the Worcester airport for safety improvements, including instrument landing systems and taxiway improvements. Other improvements include upgrades to the terminal lighting system, landscaping improvements and upgraded signage. In all, the airport will receive $36 million, or 3 percent of the plan's funding.

The upgrades come as MassPort has been in high-profile talks with JetBlue Airways over the past year following the departure of the Worcester airport's only commercial carrier, Direct Air, which went out of business last year.

Last month, MassPort CEO Thomas Glynn said JetBlue likely won't offer commercial flights out of Worcester until 2014 because it needs assurances that the airport's landing system will receive a $30-million upgrade. He said MassPort had been in talks with JetBlue about offering a couple flights a day, likely to Florida, to start.
