December 7, 2015 Power Players: Politicos

Michael F. Collins

Leading research and public health outreach efforts both locally and globally, the University of Massachusetts Medical School does much more than educate medical students.

It's a catalyst for myriad projects, from Ebola response efforts to projects aimed at improving health care for veterans and public health initiatives in Greater Worcester. Bringing all the pieces together is Chancellor Michael F. Collins, a physician who was hired as interim chancellor in 2007 before his official appointment in 2008.

Formerly chancellor of the UMass Boston and president and CEO of the Caritas Christi Health Care System, Collins has an eye for innovation. Among his latest ventures is the planned formation of a regional clinical campus in Springfield in partnership with Baystate Health, the dominant provider in that region, which will allow the school to grow its class size from 125 to 150.

Under Collins, UMass Medical School also announced this year it will begin accepting out-of-state students for the first time, beginning next year.
