Money matters

Welcome to the October issue of MetroWest495 Biz. It's time again to turn attention to money matters. Our annual Banking and Finance issue this year examines how the improved national home mortgage business is playing out locally. As with the U.S., the local home loan market is becoming more favorable for community banks and credit unions, and they have some important advantages but also distinct challenges. Find out what they are in Livia Gershon's Page 12 feature.

Again on the finance front, Gershon explores how financing for solar projects has become a bigger business among local lenders who are attracted by the cash solar installations generate for their users. Learn about why they're a relatively safe proposition on Page 14. Also related to finance, and health care, is our feature examining the apparent turnaround that executives at MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick have been able to set into motion during the first half of 2015. Learn about their strategy on Page 16.

Outside the issue focus, we have two more compelling features highlighting important local economic happenings. On Page 18, freelance writer Susan Shalhoub highlights important efforts by local towns to create attractive communities for young professionals to live in, an important factor for corporate tenants that want to recruit and retain the best talent. On Page 20, get the details on Raytheon Company's decision to shutter its longtime Sudbury operations by the end of next year and relocate most of its radar development activities, including the majority of the Sudbury workforce, a few miles west to Marlborough.

Also in this issue, we are pleased to offer the point of view of veteran real estate reporter Christina O'Neill in our Real Angle column on Page 11. We also were pleased to sit down with Paul Joseph, the new president and CEO of the MetroWest Chamber of Commerce and an entrepreneur, for our regular What It Takes feature. After a few weeks on the job, Joseph shares his early vision for leading the chamber on Page 22.

Be sure to browse our Roundup section on Pages 5 to 7, which recaps local business news — including major announcements in recent weeks about Hopkinton's EMC and Framingham's TJX. On Page 10, our list features MetroWest credit unions. And for a listing of upcoming business networking events, and a snapshot of two recent events, see our calendar and Out and About sections on Pages 8 and 9. n
