National Grid Donates $10K To Girl Scouts For STEM

In an effort to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics — or STEM — programming, National Grid has donated $10,000 to the Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts.

The Girl Scouts announced that the funding will support a day-long, interactive STEM conference for girls, the Geek is Glam STEM Expo (GIG). The conference, which will be Oct. 19 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, is for girls in grades 4 through 8 and gives them access to hands-on interactive workshops, career panel discussions and demonstrations.

According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, STEM jobs in the United States have grown three times as fast as those in other fields, 20 percent of women in college intend to major in a STEM field, compared to 50 percent of men. However, 74 percent of teenage girls say they're interested in STEM. The institute has also found that girls are more interested in STEM fields if they have more exposure to it through someone in a related career or related extracurricular activities.

No former Girl Scout experience is necessary to attend the GIG Expo. For more information, visit www.yourtimewellspent.org.
