National Grid Preparing For Prolonged Outages

National Grid, whose electricity and gas territory covers most of Central Massachusetts, said it is preparing for widespread and prolonged power outages as a result of the snow that has already started falling today.

"We continue to monitor the weather and are taking action now to be able to respond quickly and safely to potential outages that could occur. Our pre-planning activities are in anticipation of a very damaging storm," said Kathy Lyford, vice president of the utility's New England operations. "We take the safety of the public and our employees very seriously. We are reaching out to our life support and critical care customers and have plans in place to provide regular updates for customers."

As of 10:52 a.m., National Grid was reporting no outages in its Massachusetts territories.

The utility is asking those who lose power to report the outage by calling 1-800-465-1212
