National Jobless Claims Rise

After hitting a four-year low the previous week, initial unemployment claims nationwide rose last week to 388,000, according to the U.S Department of Labor. That's 46,000 higher than the previous week's revised figure of 342,000.

Last week's numbers increased the four-week moving average by 750, to 365,500.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the week ending Oct. 6 was 2.5 percent, down 0.1 percentage point from the previous week. The total number of people claiming benefits for the week ending Sept. 29 was 5,001,985, down 42,664 from the previous week. Claims were down 25 percent from the same week in 2011 when they sat at 6,694,493.
