New U.S. unemployment claims hit pre-recession low

In what may be seen as part of the continuing economic recovery, fewer people filed for U.S. unemployment benefits last week.

The Labor Department reported that for the week ending Aug. 2, applications for unemployment fell 14,000 to a seasonally adjusted 289,000.

The four-week average, a more stable measure, fell 4,000 to 293,500, marking the lowest levels since February 2006, almost two years before the recession.
