Polar Among Food And Drink Cos. Backing Recycling Effort

Legislation that would have put deposits on plastic juice bottles and other drink containers in Massachusetts is dead for now, but some of the companies who opposed the bill because of projected cost increases have launched a statewide recycling initiative in its wake.

The Massachusetts Recycling Program, backed by the Massachusetts Beverage Association and the Massachusetts Food Association, will begin in 2013 and run for two years.

The $533,000 program aims to help communities adopt pay-as-you-throw programs, including those with single-stream recycling, meaning customers do not have to sort their recyclables.

"Legislative leaders have spoken clearly that they want a comprehensive approach to recycling across the commonwealth, and they are looking for a commitment from our industry to help lead the way," said Chris Crowley, executive vice president at Polar Beverages in Worcester and chairman of the beverage association.

The recycling program will offer free workshops about pay-as-you-throw in 15 to 20 communities and it will pay for 200 recycling receptacles in public areas.
