Property Tax Data Source

A new online database offers in-depth data on local property taxes in all 50 states.

The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and the George Washington Institute of Public Policy created the web site to restore a service that the federal government provided until 1996.

In 1959, Congress established a commission that published information on property taxes and other issues, which was used by journalists, researchers, policymakers and businesspeople until a budget cut eliminated the publication.

The new site offers datasets and links regarding the property tax and its role in state and local finance. Users can study particular states or compare information from one state to another. The available information includes what types of property are taxed at what rate, what relief or incentive programs are available and the significance of property taxes to state and local governments.
