Report: Mass. among top solar-installation states

Massachusetts had the fourth-highest number of solar photovoltaic (PV) installations in 2013, contributing to a record year for the solar energy industry, with installations nationwide increasing 41 percent compared to 2012.

The U.S. Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), a trade group, and GTM Research released the findings in their report, Solar Market Insight: 2013 Year-in-Review.

The report found that the U.S. installed 4,751 megawatts of solar PV power in 2013, or 140,000 individual solar installations, bringing the nation’s total to more than 440,000. And the fourth quarter of 2013 was the best ever for U.S. solar PV installations, with 2,106 megawatts installed, up 60 percent over the fourth quarter of 2012, the next largest quarter.

Massachusetts added of 237 megawatts of solar PV power in 2013, including residential and non-residential project, according to the report. California led, with 2,621, followed by Arizona, with 421, and North Carolina, with 335.

“Perhaps more than the number, 2013 offered the U.S. solar market the first real glimpse of its path toward mainstream status. The combination of rapid customer adoption, grassroots support for solar, improved financing terms and public market successes displayed clear gains for solar in the eyes of both the general population and the investment community,” said Shayle Kann, senior vice president at GTM.
