Seven Saws Brewing launches Holden expansion & canning line

Seven Saws Brewing Co., a four-year-old craft beer manufacturer in Holden, is building an 8,000-square-foot expansion in the Holden Industrial Park, which will feature brewing and canning operations, as well as indoor and outdoor taproom space.

The expansion is expected to open this summer, marking a major milestone for the company, whose current brewpub space is about 500 square feet.

“It is going to allow us to increase our production upward of 15 times capacity,” said partner Tom Anderson.

The company began in Anderson’s garage in 2017, at which point it distributed its products to local restaurants. A year later, Seven Saws opened a brewpub on the town’s Main Street, where it served customers on-site and, as inventory allowed, continued to sell beer through local eateries. The expansion will allow the company to can its beer for the first time, with the aim of growing a retail operation.

As of yet, Seven Saws plans to distribute and sell beers themselves, on-site, said Anderson. Although there have been conversations about retailing products through liquor stores and other venues, Seven Saws hopes to serve as the primary destination for their customers.

“Dependent upon the demand that our current patrons and customers bring to us, we’d love to sell it all from the new brewhouse/taproom,” Anderson said.

This kind of expansion had always been the goal for the company, said Anderson, who said seeing the project come to fruition is like seeing a dream realized.

“Reality-wise, did we ever think we’d get here? Depends on the day,” Anderson said.

The new taproom is being designed to serve not just as a place to imbibe, but also as an events space, Anderson said, noting the brewery will welcome any business leaders looking for a location for company retreats and meetings.

As for the pandemic, Anderson said remaining small appears to have helped the manufacturer manage the challenges associated with safety and coronavirus regulatory compliance. It’s impossible to know, he said, what the challenges would have been if it launched its expansion a year ago.

“We’ve maintained production, we’ve maintained business through the pandemic in addition to moving forward with this,” he said.
