Shaw's Supermarkets has announced that it's laying off 700 employees across its 169 New England stores, effective Saturday.
The stores affected are Shaw's and Star Market, the West Bridgewater-based company said today.
According to the company's website, Shaw's has 84 locations in the state with 15 in Central Massachusetts.
"A decision of this nature is never easy, but after careful evaluation, it is unfortunately the necessary step for us to take to help improve our business, reduce expenses and reinvest in more customer-facing initiatives," President Mike Stigers said in a statement. "As we continue to look at the best ways to achieve success, we recognized an opportunity to align our workforce to more effectively serve the marketplace by scheduling team members more appropriately to serve customers at the times they shop."
Shaw's, a subsidiary of Minnesota-based Supervalu Inc., said about 90 associates affected by the layoffs had already been notified by this morning. The company has about 17,000 employees throughout New England.
