St. V's Designated 'Most Wired' For IT Use

Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester has been recognized as one of the nation's "Most Wired" for its use of health information technology (IT) to improve performance.

According to the results of the 2012 Most Wired Survey – sponsored by the American Hospital Association and IT health care services company McKesson Corp. and released in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine – hospitals are generally focused on expanding and adopting technology that protects patient data and optimizes patient flow and communications.

"The safety of our patients is our No. 1 priority and the high quality of care we provide is a source of pride for all of us," said Erik Wexler, Saint Vincent Hospital CEO. "Leading- edge information technology is a key component of good health care in 2012, so we are proud that Saint Vincent Hospital has been recognized as one of the most wired hospitals in the United States."

Keys to St. Vincent's success in the 14th annual survey, which included more than 200 hospitals, are that the hospital uses intrusion detection systems to protect patient privacy and security of patient data; automated patient flow systems and performance improvement scorecards to help reduce inefficiencies. It was also cited for its checking of drug interactions and drug allergies when medications are ordered, which helps reduce medication errors.
