State OKs Nashoba Medical Center Sale

The state Public Health Council has approved the sale of Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer and Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill to the new Steward Health Care System.

Steward announced in December that it would buy the two hospitals from fellow for-profit hospital system Essent Healthcare for $21 million.

Steward, which is backed by New York private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, bought the former Caritas Christi hospitals in the Boston area last year.

The council, which is part of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, approved the deal unanimously, according to a staff member.
