Union objects to postal centers in Staples stores

Postal worker union members are protesting the opening of Postal Service retail centers inside 82 Staples stores.

The American Postal Workers Union has delivered letters protesting the move to Staples stores in New York, New Jersey, Illinois and the Bay Area, the union said.

“We are adamantly opposed to USPS (United States Postal Service) plans to replace good-paying union jobs with non-union low-wage jobs held by workers who have no accountability for the safety and security of the mail,” Mark Dimondstein, APWU president, said in a union news bulletin. “This is a direct assault on our jobs and on public postal services.”

A USPS spokeswoman said no union workers will be affected by the pilot program with the Framingham-based office-supply store chain. In addition, she said the postal service already offers services in more than 65,000 retail outlets staffed by non-APWU employees.

“This is not meant to take away local service,” USPS spokeswoman Darlene Reid-deMeo said. “It’s meant to enhance it.”

The one-year trial began Nov. 18, and includes Staples locations in Auburn, Gardner, Shrewsbury, Sturbridge, Westborough and Worcester.
