U.S. Unemployment Flat; August Job Growth Weak

The nation's unemployment rate was essentially unchanged in August, holding steady at 9.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The private sector added only 17,000 jobs in August compared to 110,000 in August 2010, and 231,000 over the prior two months.

There are approximately 14 million Americans that officials count as unemployed. Approximately 43 percent of those people have been unemployed for 27 weeks or longer. That percentage was unchanged in August. The number of involuntary part-time workers, who experienced cutbacks in their hours or could not find full-time work, increased from 8.4 million to 8.8 million.

The national unemployment rate has been hovering around 9 percent since April.
