Worcester's longtime building commissioner, John Kelly, will retire this fall, the City announced Monday.

Kelly has been Worcester's building commissioner since 2009, but his time with the city started in 1990. Within two years, he became a certified building inspector. After leaving the city in 1994, he returned in 2007 and two years later reached the top position in the city's inspectional services department.

Kelly will retire Oct. 1, the City said. Kelly oversees a $4.1-million budget and 63 employees, most of whom are inspectors. His tenure included overseeing some notable building projects, including the demolition and redevelopment of the old Worcester Galleria mall site downtown, the Worcester Public Market building in Kelley Square and the start of construction on Polar Park, which is set to become home of the Worcester Red Sox baseball team next year.

Kelly's upcoming retirement will be the latest business-related management post the city will fill this year.

In May, the city announced it promoted Peter Dunn, who held multiple economic development roles, to chief development officer. He replaced Mike Traynor, who now leads the city's law department as city solicitor. Timothy McGourthy, the city's chief development officer from 2006 to 2014, was also announced as Worcester's new CFO. He succeeds Thomas Zidelis, who retired in March after serving as the city's top finance official for 32 years.
