Worcester Chamber, Neighborhood Group Agree On Tax Rate

The Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Shrewsbury Street Neighborhood Association have agreed to support residential and commercial tax rate increases of 4 percent each, as the Worcester City Council tax classification hearing approaches Dec. 4.

The two groups met to find common ground as the council prepares to set the city's dual tax rate for fiscal 2013, according to a statement by the Worcester Regional Chamber.

Under the proposal supported by the two groups, the residential tax rate would be $18.58 per $1,000 assessed valuation, while the commercial tax rate would be $30.85 per $1,000 assessed valuation – a 4 percent increase for each tax class.

Gary J. Vecchio, president of the Shrewsbury Street Neighborhood Association, said in the statement that a 4-percent tax increase is fair for both parties.

"Now, we can both be voices for the entire community of Worcester. This rate ensures that both sides share equally in helping to provide for the needs of city government," Vecchio said.

The Worcester City Council set the fiscal 2012 in May, after a lengthy property revaluation process. Some property owners saw taxes soar after assessed values skyrocketed – some by as much as 20 percent.

Worcester residents saw a more modest tax rate increase for fiscal 2012 than the one supported by the Worcester Regional Chamber and the Shrewsbury Street Neighborhood Association. The average homeowner's bill increased 1.7 percent, while the average commercial property owner's bill jumped 4.72 percent.
