Worcester Nonprofits Win State Grants

Four nonprofit organizations in Worcester have received nearly $500,000 in cultural capital grants, part of a $5.2-million package from the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, according to the office of State Sen. Harriette Chandler.

The organizations receiving money were:

  • American Antiquarian Society; $116,000 to renovate its book and paper conservation lab, including upgrading equipment and expanding the existing space;
  • The EcoTarium; $244,290 to connect the facility to the electrical grid, reducing reliance on its aging power plant, ensuring energy continuity, and improving the safety of visitors and wildlife;
  • Worcester Art Museum, $100,000 to help comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act by building access ramps at the two main entrances and a centrally located elevator at the Lancaster Lobby; and
  • Worcester Community Cable Access; $25,000 for planning expenses associated with the expansion and renovations of its facility to have an auditorium-studio for live audience television and audio recordings, a new classroom for media arts training, and additional improvements.

“These organizations have been an important part of preserving history and culture in Worcester,” said Chandler, D-Worcester. “I am confident in the Patrick administration’s investment in the arts in Massachusetts and know that these projects will prove to serve our communities well in the future.”

Each grant must be matched with funds from private or public sources, Chandler’s statement said.
