Worcester receives $1.26M towards emergency prep

Destination Worcester via Flickr Worcester's Board of Health has received funds to help emergency preparedness in the region.

The Worcester Board of Health has received $1,262,552 in federal grants in an effort to boost planning and medical response during emergencies and disasters.

The funding is part of $7.6 million received by the state and distributed to create six Health and Medical Coordinating Coalitions (HMCC) across Massachusetts that will be used to funnel in Department of Health funds and coordinate local emergency preparedness. The grants were awarded following a competitive bidding process, according to the Massachusetts Department of Health.

Each HMCC is supported by a sponsoring organization with dedicated staffing -- in this case, the Worcester Board of Health -- whose objective is to ensure integrated planning and capacity-building across five core disciplines: acute care hospitals, community health centers and ambulatory care organizations, emergency medical services, local public health and long term care.

Federal grant funding has been provided through the Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) and the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program (PHEP).
