The Worcester area's unemployment rate ticked down a tenth of a point to 8 percent over the year, the state's Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development said.
The area's seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate in January was 7.9 percent, down from 8 percent a year ago.
Month to month, unemployment was up from 7.2 percent in December, as holiday hiring gains let up.
Compared to January 2012, there were actually 300 fewer people employed and 300 fewer people unemployed. The movement in the rate was caused by a 600-person reduction in the area labor force.
Manufacturing was down 900 jobs over the year. Meanwhile, education and health services added 1,900 jobs and health care and social services gained 1,400.
In northern Worcester County, the unadjusted unemployment rate was 9.7 percent, down from 9.9 percent a year ago. And in the Framingham area, the rate ticked up a tenth of a point to 5.8 percent.
Officials released statewide numbers earlier this month that showed an unadjusted statewide unemployment rate of 7.4 percent.
