In its last jobs report before Tuesday's election, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the unemployment rate edged up to 7.9 percent in October, from 7.8 percent in September, though the economy added 171,000 jobs.
The slight increase in the country's unemployment rate follows declines reported by the BLS last month. According to today's report, 12.3 million workers remained unemployed in the United States in October, and 40.6 percent of those workers have been jobless for six months or more. But the number of people working part-time jobs due to necessity fell by 269,000 in October, after jumping by 582,000 in September.
Despite October's higher unemployment rate, it is still one of the lowest reported in almost four years; it fell below 8 percent last month for the first time since January 2009.
Sectors that saw job growth in October included professional and business services, health care, and retail, according to the BLS.
