2011 40 Under Forty: Brett Campbell

DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC RELATIONS & FUND DEVELOPMENT, Auburn VNA Health Network

Company location: Auburn

Residence: Oxford

Favorite color: The dark blue of a summer's night during sunset

Age: 30

Career highlights: I started my professional work experience at TJX Cos. as a senior analyst, and although my love for clothes kept me interested in the job, my passion for making a difference was unfulfilled. I was fortunate to enter the home health care industry as a marketing manager at Home Staff and later as the community relations manager at Harmon Home Health. Now, I’m the director of public relations and fund development at Auburn VNA Health Network.

Community involvement: Our agency’s philosophy and mission are deeply rooted in caring for our community. I incorporate this value into my daily work by organizing events such as our Diabetes & Health Symposium this past June, which was a free community educational event, our upcoming Celebrate Community Annual Recognition Dinner, as well as raising funds for our free community wellness programs.

Biggest success: In the home care industry, the biggest success comes from making a difference in a person’s life. The gratitude from a patient or family member can make all of the stress and long hours of the job more than worthwhile.

Biggest challenges: In my career I have been faced with a few situations that required tactful change management skills. The ability to adapt, be flexible, strategic and poised are valuable attributes that develop over time as a result of managing change in an organization. I believe a challenge can make one stronger and a more effective leader in the end.

Mentors: My parents have been the most influential people in my life. My father Robert Salmonson has always been a great mentor and I admire the respect he has earned in the field of medicine. Also, I would like to mention a few individuals who have made a significant impact on my career development, namely Nancy and John Stassi and Kimberly Harmon.

Hidden talent: Any golfer knows it requires a certain amount of talent to play the game. Not only do I enjoy it, but I can hold my own on the course.
