Exercise 4 C's for successful team-building

Question: I have just taken a new job where my primary responsibility is to manage a totally new department within a company. It will be my job to build this department from the ground up. What can I do to create a team that is geared for growth and success?

Answer: What a wonderful and challenging opportunity! To create a team that is truly engaged and that will perform at the highest level, in terms of both process and results, you need to find team members that recognize the importance of these four areas:

1. Commitment - The team's establishment of a common purpose, and the roles, values, expectations and ground rules required to achieve that common purpose.

2. Communication - The skills, processes and technology to best help team members communicate one-on-one and throughout the team.

3. Collaboration - Team members' ability to work effectively with each other as well as with other teams in the organization, and to make decisions and resolve conflicts.

4. Coordination - The need for team members to facilitate the team process and to provide appropriate rewards and recognition for team-related achievements.

By installing measures and finding individuals who recognize and utilize the importance of these four areas of team functionality you will have a department that is working at peak performance.
