Milford Regional Offers New Robotic Surgery

Milford Regional Medical Center has become the first hospital in Central Massachusetts to offer a new, state-of-the-art robotic-assisted surgery for gallbladder removal, officials there said.

According to the hospital, the Single Site da Vinci technology allows surgeons to remove a gallbladder through a single, small incision in the belly button, leaving no visible scar. Other benefits of the procedure include minimal pain, low blood loss and a faster recovery time than traditional gallbladder surgery, according to a statement from the medical center.

Before the da Vinci technology, the only option for gallbladder surgery that was minimally invasive involved three to four incisions that were 1- to-2 inches long. Scopes and other tools were inserted to view and remove the gallbladder. But the new technology allows all instruments to go through one incision, with the surgery lasting about an hour and the patient going home the same day. The surgeon controls the movement of miniaturized wristed instruments from a console where the surgical site can be magnified and viewed in 3-D.

“This exciting new procedure is one more step we have taken to make surgery less invasive and more beneficial for our patients,” Edward J. Kelly, president of Milford Regional Medical Center, said in a statement. “To be the first hospital in Central Massachusetts to offer single-site robotic surgery demonstrates Milford Regional’s commitment to providing patients with the most up-to-date minimally invasive surgical options.”

According to the hospital, about 1 million people have their gallbladders removed each year nationally and about 40 percent of patients are women between the ages of 18 and 44.
