Montachusett Regional Transit Authority, or MART, will receive a $685,746 grant from the Federal Transit Administration to develop a regional app to make travel for North County residents easier and less expensive.
MART is based in Fitchburg and serves communities throughout Northern Worcester County and Western Middlesex Counties. The app will connect riders with other regional transportation agencies and companies to plan trips.
The funding comes from the FTA’s Investments from the Areas of Persistent Poverty Program aimed at improving public transit options for riders in areas defined as low-income by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The program awarded $20 million in grants in 47 communities across the United States. Elsewhere in Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in Boston received $127,367 to complete the design of electric bus chargers at Ashmont station in Dorchester.
The app is not the only new service MART is working on. On July 5, the transit authority started a taxi and livery service for people over the age of eight traveling to or from Lancaster, Lunenburg, and Sterling, according to the MART website. The ride service is funded by MassDevelopment.
