Obama to deliver Worcester Tech graduation address
President Obama will deliver this year’s commencement address to graduating seniors from Worcester Technical High School, the school’s principal announced this morning.
The president will address the class of 2014 on Wednesday, June 11, at the DCU Center.
Principal Sheila Harrity made the announcement this morning to students and staff.
“We are honored that President Obama has chosen to address the graduates of Worcester Technical High School,” Harrity said in a statement. “As a pre-eminent leader and advocate for career and technical education, the president’s work and commitment to promoting equality of opportunity for all, will inspire the class of 2014.”
Presidents normally address college commencements, but Obama has addressed several high school classes since being elected in 2008. In 2012, he addressed graduating seniors at Joplin High School in Joplin, Mo., a year after a killer tornado swept through the area. Three years ago, he delivered the commencement address at Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, and in 2010, at Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Last year, Worcester Tech was named a U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School. Also, Harrity was selected Massachusetts Principal of the Year and last September as 2014 MetLife/NASSP National High School Principal of the Year. She also received the 2013 Terrel Bell Award by the U.S. Department of Education for outstanding school leadership.
