State Unemployment Eases In March

Unemployment waned during March in several of the state's labor markets, including Worcester and Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner, according to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The Worcester labor market gained 400 jobs in March, about 0.2 percent growth over February, and the same number it gained between February and March a year ago.

The Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner labor market gained 300 jobs during the month, about 0.6 percent growth compared to the previous month.

Unemployment rates were lower in 10 state labor markets and essentially unchanged in seven. Seasonally adjusted, the statewide unemployment rate was 7.8 percent in March compared to 7.7 percent in February. Without the seasonal adjustment, the unemployment rate for March was 8.2 percent compared to 8.3 percent in February.

In March 2008, the statewide unemployment rate was 4.9 percent.
