Unity Power Alliance (UPA), a joint venture that includes Worcester’s ThermoEnergy Corp., has received final approval of a $1-million award from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The funding given to UPA, which is made up of ThermoEnergy, ITEAS S.p.A., Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Georgia Institute of Technology, will be used to advance the team’s pressurized oxy-combustion technology for clean, coal-fired power generation.
Each participating organization plays a specific role in developing and analyzing the clean combustion platform, with ThermoEnergy building the bench-scale testing unit.
Robert Marrs, UPA’s managing director, said the technology UPA will use involves a flameless combustion system that’s already successful at a plant in Italy.
“We are confident that the team can achieve even greater efficiencies given the opportunity to test the reactor at a variety of higher pressures within the scope of our combined UPA patents,” he said.
The first phase of the program is expected to be followed by a larger phase that will include $10 million to $20 million being awarded by the DOE to assist with construction of a pilot project.
