Worcester courthouse apartments to open in phases this fall

The $53-million renovation of the former Worcester County Courthouse in Lincoln Square into new apartments is facing more slight delays, this time with planned opening in phases starting in the fall.

Some apartments will open in the first phase and others in a later phase early next year, according to a memo from the city administration to the City Council for its meeting Tuesday.

The development, to be called Courthouse Lofts, was first planned to open in June, and then late summer, and now fall. Construction continued throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Michael Lozano, senior project manager for developer Trinity Financial in Boston, said in an email he couldn't be more specific on the opening timetable yet.

"The pandemic has been challenging, as it has been for everyone, but we are making good progress at this point," he said.

Construction began in the spring 2019 and has included stripping much of the old courthouse to the studs but keeping some relics, including judge's benches, bookshelves, window sills, terrazzo floors. The building has been outfitted with new windows and ventilation systems.

Courthouse Lofts will have 117 residential units, many set aside under affordability restrictions. The building will  include a residents' media room, fitness center, pet spa, and a small museum for Major Taylor, the Black bicyclist who once lived in Worcester and for whom a boulevard a few blocks away is named.

Trinity Development of Boston bought the site in 2017 from the city for $1.3 million. Much of the project's cost is covered by historic tax credits and other subsidies.
