WPI Professor Wins Award For Battery Innovation

Professor Yan Wang, of WPI and Battery Resourcers

A professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has been awarded $40,000 from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.

Yan Wang, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at WPI and director of the university's electrochemical energy laboratory, will use the 2012 Catalyst Award money to continue working on new technology for flow batteries – rechargeable systems used to store electric energy produced by wind and solar power. According to WPI, the technology will allow for higher energy and power density and a longer life cycle than conventional flow batteries at a lower cost.

With the Catalyst Award funding, Wang, his research team, and his collaborators will conduct experiments to measure the battery's performance and build a working prototype. They ultimately plan to found a startup company to commercialize the new battery technology.
