If all goes to plan, Mumgaard’s Commonwealth Fusion Systems could end up being one of the most innovative companies to ever call Central Massachusetts home.
Often seen as a potential panacea to the world’s seemingly-never-ending fears over climate change and energy production, CFS has made meaningful progress in advancing nuclear fusion technology to the cusps of commercial-scale implementation. The technology, which is miles safer than traditional nuclear energy types and emissions-free, could unlock an almost endless amount of power, which could be used to power everything from homes to manufacturing plants.
Mumgaard and his team in Devens and beyond have marched toward that goal step-by-step, with every month seemingly bringing another exciting development. In December, CFS announced it had inked a deal with the Commonwealth of Virginia to construct the first-ever commercial-scale fusion plant, set to open in early 2030s. Just a month later, Mumgaard was on the stage at the prestigious World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, sharing insights into technology with some of the world’s biggest names in business and politics.
As the world competes to bring fusion energy forward, Mumgaard works to see the United States is first to the finish line, bringing some of the world’s most innovative scientific work to the region in the process.
