Amazon 4-star stores located in the Natick Mall and The Shoppes at Blackstone Valley plaza in Millbury will close, along with almost all of Amazon’s physical stores, according to a report from Reuters Wednesday evening.
The Seattle-based e-commerce company told Reuters it plans to shut down all 68 of its brick-and-mortar bookstores, pop-ups, and 4-star retail shops in the United States and United Kingdom.
The Amazon 4-star store is a curated retail shop which sells merchandise rated four stars and above by Amazon.com customers. The only two 4-star locations in Massachusetts were in the Natick Mall, where the outpost opened in fall 2019, and in Millbury’s Shoppes of Blackstone Valley. The Millbury location was under construction in August, and opened later in 2021.
Workers at Amazon’s closing retail locations will receive severance or help finding jobs at any nearby company stores, according to Reuters’ report. Amazon did not specify how many jobs would be cut or when exactly the store closures will happen.
Amazon began its brick-and-mortar experiment in 2015 when it opened its first Amazon Books shop in Seattle, but its physical stores’ revenue made up only 3% of the company’s sales last quarter.
The e-commerce firm also owns Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh grocery stores, as well as Amazon Go automated convenience stores, which will remain open.
