Because nice matters

Human resource managers in Massachusetts make a median base salary of $82,400, second highest in the nation, according to a report issued today by Waltham-based Salary.com.

The salary figure is second only to New York, and well above the national median salary of $78,800 for HR managers, according to Salary.com's 2007 Human Resources Compensation Survey.

Pay for human resources employees varies widely by industry, the report concluded. The finance and insurance industry pays its HR folks $94,400 per year on average, compared with $70,800 in the health care and social assistance industry and $72,800 in public administration.

The top three states for HR compensation were New York, Massachusetts and Minnesota. The bottom three were North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania, the report said.

The report was based on information supplied by more than 360 businesses nationwide, ranging in size from eight to more than 350,000 employees.
